EVO2017

Alright folks, so due to awesome circumstances I've found myself in Vegas at the same time for not only a Dirty Heads show, but EVO 2017.

Via Wikipedia (truncated): The Evolution Championship Series (EVO or Evo) is an annual esports event that focuses exclusively on fighting games. The tournament is a completely open tournament and uses the double elimination format. The first Evolution was originally held as a Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha 2 tournament called the Battle by the Bay. It changed its name to Evo in 2002. Every successive tournament has seen an increase of attendees. It has been held at various venues across the Las Vegas Valley since 2005.

I don't really know how to word this other than I am lucky, or privileged. The slang of the times would say "blessed" but that infers holy, and I highly doubt the higher power decides whether I go to video game conventions or see my friends band. That being said, this has been a pretty solid vacation. (Aye-aye-aye) Long story short, my buddy is a main AV guy for the company that works for EVO every year, and he just walked me in. I was unfortunately only able to stay for two hours, but other than the Finals, I got a good gist of what it's all about. I've decided on presenting this blog as I experienced it, including pictures. This will help further my recollection of the the day, as well as probably be a bit more interesting to read. Onward and upward!

As per usual here comes the rant. Okay Gamers. I get it. You don't go out in public a lot, thus you do not know how to public. But for the love of god DO NOT pull Crazy Ivan's (ie walk in a direction in a crowd for a period of time then abruptly do a 180 degree turn around), stop in the middle of a walking path, or go thru multi-doored doorways on the left (we learned to walk on the right in grade school). Also, deodorant and please be able to feel when your buttcrack is showing. Oh yea, this too. DON'T be kilt guy.

Lots of vendors as I walked around.

So this shot above represents what it's like to compete in the pools, early in the weekend. I had a good buddy compete in SFV and Injustice. He did well, a sort of moral victory, but I know he hasn't been playing a lot lately, it's just a fun time. I found out registration was $75 and then $10 a game. I guess they have to pay the overhead and prize pool somehow, but I don't know if that's a lot or not. The fact that ANYONE can enter EVO is pretty awesome.

Here are some observations I've made. This event felt, I don't know how to word it other than thrown together. It didn't have a "polished" feel. Maybe I'm just used to the way E3 is run, so I am comparing. What's crazy is that this is supposedly its biggest year. It must have felt like some kids threw it together in their garage years prior. Honestly, it made it kind of cool too. You could really just walk up and watch anyone playing, or play anything, or challenge anyone. Bring your own console is a pretty cool idea, as I travel with mine a lot. (God I need a Switch) Another thing is I know for Finals they switch to a seated venue, and ESPN broadcasts it (for the second year). ESPN is on a downward spiral. Picking up eSports and things like the Drone Racing League are really smart if they want to stay relevant. Fox Sports seems to be taking over "actual" sports. (Don't flame me for that comment)

This pretty stage is what my buddy controls for the most part, and where the marquee matches go.

/startrant. I don't know how I feel about this. A lot of the vendors straight rip off art. You didn't create pikachu, or mario, or whatever. Even if in "original" scenes, I still feel like you are stealing. You didn't pay Nintendo or anyone anythign to use their designs. /endrant

I don't know if its inaugural but EVO is expanding and that's good for gaming.

 EVERYTING!

EVERYTING!

So that was essentially my EVO2017 experience. It was early in the competition, so it was less "exciting". I did however get to check out the lay of the land, play a few old school fighters, meet up with great friends, and experience one of the most epic competitions in gaming. I wish I could say I liked fighters more. I have a decent reptile on MK3 and Ken in street fighter, but nothing worth putting money down. Hopefully I will be back next year, and plan for better coverage of the event. (as usual service sucks in there).

Thanks for reading, it means alot. -keeb
